Last week we had the pleasure of visiting Black Hops Brewing and checking out their new brewery and tasting room which is opening very soon! The 3 guys behind Black Hops are all best mates and have been gypsy brewing since 2014. They’re super stoked to finally have a place of their own to master their craft beer and share everything they’re learning along the way. The location is 50 meters from the beach and a part of a new up and coming neighborhood in Burleigh Heads.
As for tasting, we first tried the Beach House Ale, their Gold Coast take on the traditional French Farmhouse ale. Light bodied, low bitterness and dry, makes this easy drinking. Delicately hopped, giving tropical aromas whilst letting the yeast shine through with zesty fruit & spice.
The second beer we tried was the 30 Cal Lager. Their mid strength take on the classic Californian Common. Traditionally brewed with Northern Brewer Hops, Californian Lager Yeast and Victory biscuit style malt that gives this beer a layer of dry toasted complexity and a russet brown colour.
These guys are doing beer differently than anyone else in Australia! Operation Brewery, a 10-part Podcast series that takes you into their world as they work on opening the Black Hops Brewery and Cellar Door. They are also releasing a book that shares the title Operation Brewery which will be released soon.
The Black Hops guys will be heading the GABS Festival in Melbourne next month, where they will be unveiling their newest brew the “Assault Trifle Pale Ale”. A super epic Trifle inspired pale ale with sponge cake, aeroplane jelly, toasted coconut, flagons of cream sherry, madagascan vanilla and plenty of fresh fruit (mango, peach, apricot, passionfruit, pineapple). Milk sugar for sweetness.
We love that it's like family in the craft beer industry, everyone knows everyone and can always appreciate other's style and taste! These guys are a great new addition to that family and if you’re in the Gold Coast make it a priority to stop by they will be open Mondays-Saturdays.
